One of the biggest questions about reusable incontinence wear has nothing to do with absorbency. It is far more practical: what happens after you wear it?
The answer is reassuringly ordinary. A sensible wash-and-dry routine quickly becomes part of normal laundry, and looking after the fabric properly helps preserve absorbency, comfort and the life of the garment. For anyone new to Dignity4You, this is the routine worth learning from the start.
| Rinse, but do not overcomplicate it
After use, a quick cold rinse can help remove residue before the garment goes into the wash. There is no need to leave products soaking for long periods. Our current care guidance specifically advises against unnecessary over-soaking because repeated soaking can be hard on fibres over time.
If you are caring for someone else, handle used garments in the same calm, practical way you would any soiled laundry: protect privacy, wash your hands, and keep clean and used items separate until laundry time.
| Wash at the recommended temperature
Dignity4You garments are designed for machine washing. Our standard guidance is a 40°C wash with ordinary washing powder or liquid. Fabric softener is best avoided because it can coat cotton fibres and reduce absorbency over time.
Product-specific care labels should always take priority, especially for items that combine cotton and waterproof layers. If infection control or a medical condition creates special laundry requirements, ask the relevant healthcare professional what is appropriate for your household.
| One small Velcro habit matters
The Washable Flannelette Adult Nappy has Velcro fasteners. Before washing, secure the hook section onto its fold-back strip. This prevents exposed Velcro from catching on the nappy itself or snagging other items in the machine.
It is a tiny step, but it is exactly the kind of habit that protects a reusable product over hundreds of wash cycles.
| Dry thoroughly before storing
Air-drying is a simple option and is recommended where practical to help extend garment life. Some Dignity4You products can also be tumble dried; because drying instructions vary by product, follow the individual care label for the garment you own.
Whatever method you use, allow absorbent layers to dry fully before the product goes back into a drawer or cupboard. Store clean items in a dry place so that the next garment is ready when you need it.
| Build a rotation that takes pressure off laundry day
A washable system works best when you have enough items to cover wearing, washing and drying. We suggest starting with at least three garments for many users, and having extra capacity if you use more than one product a day.
A simple rotation might be one in use, one clean and ready, and one washing or drying. If you rely on protection overnight as well as during the day, build the rotation around your real routine rather than an ideal one. The easier the system is to maintain, the more sustainable it becomes.
| Care for each layer according to its job
The Ladies’ Panty, Men’s Briefs, Cotton Booster Pads and Flannelette Adult Nappy contain absorbent cotton layers designed to be washed and reused. Waterproof pants and bed-protection items have a different role, so check their specific care instructions rather than assuming every piece needs identical treatment.
Correct care is part of product performance. It helps the absorbent layer keep doing its job, protects waterproof components, and supports the up-to-200-wash lifespan specified for reusable garments.
| A routine that becomes normal
The first wash may feel unfamiliar. By the fifth, it is simply laundry. That is one of the practical strengths of reusable continence care: the product comes home again instead of going into the bin.
Treat the garments well, follow the care label, and keep enough in rotation. The result is a system designed to support dignity day after day without making incontinence the centre of the household routine.
